Course summary
This three day, performance driven course teaches the skills, procedures, and data discipline needed to engage targets at extended ranges. Using a deliberate crawl walk run progression, students build from 100 yard zeroing through progressive engagements out to 1,800+ yards (site permitting), with heavy emphasis on spotter shooter teamwork, wind reading, data management, and safe range procedures.
Who it’s for
Serious precision shooters with rifle fundamentals and prior scoped rifle experience who want to develop practical, repeatable long range performance. Open to experienced civilians, security professionals, and qualified service members. Background checks or proof of authority to possess firearms required.
What you’ll learn
• Data book procedures and use of Kestrel/ballistic tools (range cards, environmental inputs, recording corrections)
• Zeroing process and verification at 100–300 yards; procedure for returning to baseline zero
• Spotter skills: spotting trace, calling hits/misses, concise shooter communication, and observation techniques
• Wind theory, wind value identification, wind formulas, and practical application across wind strata
• Ballistic problem solving: dialing vs. holding, atmospheric influences, and ballistic coefficient considerations
• Team drills and performance engagements on steel and paper at progressively longer distances (400–1800+ yards)
• Range exercises: trace drills, timed target engagements, team target rotations, positional shooting, and competitive scenarios
Format & logistics
• Three full days of classroom and extensive live fire range work; estimated ammunition use varies by student but plan for significant round count (instructor will advise).
• Student/spotter pair rotations with continuous coaching and after action reviews.
• Required gear: precision scoped rifle (suitable for extended range work), sturdy mounting system, multiple magazines, spotting optic/binoculars, Kestrel or range data device (recommended), data book/notebook, sling (optional), eye/ear protection, shooting mat, and weather appropriate clothing.
Outcomes By course completion students will be able to:
• Establish and verify reliable zeroes and record accurate long range data entries.
• Calculate and apply wind and environmental corrections using practical spotter/shooter workflows.
• Execute consistent shot processes under real world conditions and maintain effective spotter communication.
